2025 LeadHERship Luncheon

Featured Speaker:
Elaine Smith
Author & Retired FBI Special Agent
Elaine Smith, a pioneering figure in law enforcement, transitioned from a decade-long teaching career to become one of the first female FBI agents in the Chicago bureau in 1979. Her relentless pursuit of organized crime, particularly the Chicago mob, led to significant breakthroughs in the 1980s.
Assigned to investigate Ken "Tokyo Joe" Eto, a high-ranking mob associate, Smith's dedication resulted in Eto's arrest on interstate gambling charges. After surviving a botched assassination attempt by the mob, Eto chose to confide exclusively in Smith, providing testimony that led to numerous arrests and convictions of Chicago's top mobsters.
Smith's achievements include being the first female supervisor in the history of the Chicago FBI and the second promoted in the field across the United States. She also played a pivotal role in reconstructing the financial backgrounds of the 9/11 terrorists.
In retirement, Smith authored "A Gun in My Gucci," detailing her experiences taking down the Chicago mob. Her remarkable career is under consideration for a film adaptation, further cementing her legacy as a trailblazer for women in law enforcement.
