    Syracuse-Wawasee Lakes

Syracuse, Indiana, can certainly be labeled a water lover's paradise as it is home to Indiana's largest natural lake, Lake Wawasee. With access to Lake Wawasee, Syracuse Lake and five other lakes in and around this northernmost town of Kosciusko County, there are more than 3,500 acres of water just waiting to be explored.

Naturally, the lakes and water sport opportunities they provide are the focus of this resort community which is easily accessed via US 6 and SR 13 to the north and US 30 and SR 13 from the south. However, there are a number of annual attractions which often bring residents and visitors out in droves. Among the most notable are Fourth of July weekend festivities including the Wawasee Flotilla - a colorful and flamboyant display of decorated boats - and the spectacular fireworks display which both take place on Lake Wawasee. Another fireworks display is held on Syracuse Lake during Fourth of July festivities.

Car shows, art exhibits, sidewalk sales, barbecues and numerous other scheduled events are held throughout Syracuse during the summer months, while the winter brings activities such as ice fishing and the Christmas in the Park musical extravaganza.

Lake Wawasee is also home to the state-owned Wawasee Family Fishing Site. Located on the southeast shores, opportunities to fish, picnic and frolic in the outdoors are ample here. At Syracuse's beautiful Oakwood Inn, resting on the northwest banks of this natural wonder, Boat-In worship services are held every Sunday at 8:30 a.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends.

In the community's 11 acres of parks there exists a public beach, public dock and boat access sites. You will also find plenty of picnic tables, playground equipment, covered pavilions and even a gazebo/bandstand where the Music in the Park summer series features musical entertainment that widely varies from British folk music and jazz to performances by the area's own community band.

Service clubs are an active part in the Syracuse community where events and programs are hosted throughout the year. Additionally, the youth of the area are included in numerous activities conducted by the Lakeland Youth Center, the parks department and other community groups.

It is true that tourism comprises a good deal of the business activity in the Syracuse area, but those who make their permanent home here also know there are several major manufacturers in the boat, housing and automotive parts industries that maintain operations and provide employment to a highly trained workforce.

Those same residents also know that Syracuse and Lake Wawasee are rich in history an that it can be discovered in a new light through the Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum. Learn about the Miami Indian chief who made his home here and view artifacts of the days when famous gangsters used to frequent the area.

Finding accommodations in this busy area is not a difficult task. There are many homes and condominiums for out-of-town guests to rent, and an abundance of cottages, bed and breakfasts, motels and quaint inns await the opportunity to make your stay a pleasant one.

Welcome to Syracuse, where summer fun awaits on the golf courses, the lakes and in the parks. Come and see all that is offered in the Syracuse-Wawasee lakes area where natural wonders thrill the senses, water sports provide fantastic fun, and an array of special events attract folks of all ages.
